Aldous Huxley once wrote that the defining habit of our age was speed or what the French call “Vitesse.”
In a sense that is true.
Get on a plane and fly half way round the earth, chasing the dawn or the dusk to its root, and you might, I hope you do at any rate, marvel at what a wondrous world we live in. A world we are part of and a world we each fabricate.
But the defining theme of the age is most definitely a new understanding of thermodynamics.
Of that I have no doubt. When we fully pause to review the chemistry and mathematics of energy we may look nature in the eye with profound gratitude. To generate vitesse you need the application of a force.
To sustain our growthful habits we do need to totally rethink energy generation. In that focus is the seed of all retired military generals. For all needless conflict is over the belief in limited energetics.
