A lot of very smart people can be dumb. Pasteur is an example of that as an illustration of life before and after his contributions.
Before him, there was no science of microbiology. Countless of millions of people have not died and lived long good lives because of the work he and Jenner and Beauchamp did in their lifetimes.
In a similar fashion, post l-Pasteur, post a Edward Jenner, the doctors must have looked at the old ways as crazy.
That’s how I see a lot of scientific endeavor today. By no means all of it. But it’s hard to find a man who can really think independently about the nature of the cosmos.
