As a child I learned and enjoyed chess. Once an opponent copied my every move. As Oscar Wilde said: “Imitation is the highest form of flattery.” I easily won that game.
I taught an early teenager for a couple of years. And he was totally on fire with building stuff in mindcraft.
On reflection, I think that’s a good thing. Chess is about opponents squaring off.
Aren’t we tired of that model yet? All the madness of power struggles. All focused, behind the scenes, on a fundamental and fruitless misperceived distraction and digression from what matters; the focus on a soil of insecurity.
There are better pastures for our attentions.
But kids today they build shit in virtual worlds in mindcraft. Constructive stuff. They are the engineers and programmers of tomorrow.
I do like that the popularity of that game is clear. And that its fundamental focus is constructive creativity. In the zeitgeist of the time, I find much hope in that story.
