In the Spider-Man comics there is the line:
With great powers comes great responsibility
But where lies yours, or mine? And what is our collective responsibility?
Well, to love a single plant is a great responsibility. True power starts, and never loses sight of the smallest thing.
What Campbell’s work did for me was affirm that there is a great sense of nobility in the human spirit; that that is a theme that repeats like a pendulum.
In my life, I have seen that it is amplified when there is space for unprecedented and unpressurized inquiry.
“We have not even to risk the adventure alone
for the heroes of all time have gone before us.
The labyrinth is thoroughly known …
we have only to follow the thread of the hero path.
And where we had thought to find an abomination
we shall find a God.
And where we had thought to slay another
we shall slay ourselves.
Where we had thought to travel outwards
we shall come to the center of our own existence.
And where we had thought to be alone
we shall be with all the world.”
