Campbell could only have come from America. It was the only country that could furnish such a dynamic voice.
I have read his work so much, that his very sense and sensibility is ingrained in my being. When I came across the Television serious the “Power of Myth,” I must have watched it 50 times.
In a sense, he was far ahead of Carl Jung. Jung didn’t really see into the nuanced errors of alchemy but Campbell read so widely and had such little interest in the mad academic protocols that he had his own voice. Inwardly I’m so familiar with him that I might ponder at times: “What would Joe have said about that?”
He was dead right here:
I would say that all our sciences are the material that has to be mythologized. A mythology gives spiritual import – what one might call rather the psychological, inward import, of the world of nature round about us, as understood today.~Joseph Campbell
