Gandhi is an interesting character. My mentor knew him. Not the way he knew Nehru. But he associated with him. He said of Gandhi that he would not meet a wrong with another wrong. And when you look at the credits in the movie ‘Gandhi,” the director, Sir Richard Attenborough, he chose to quote Einstein on Gandhi.
Spielberg’s Lincoln was another great such epic but the landscape of film changed between the two movies. When Ben Kingsley (the actor that played Gandhi) was on the coffin train to the memorial service, he asked the driver how many people were behind him. The answer that came back was in the millions.
The whole country was behind that movie and Gandhi himself. Because he cared enough to stand for principles Parmenides laid down centuries ago.
Such principles matter,
They change the very destiny of the planet.
For the better.
Einstein said of him:
“Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.”
